Sacrifice Meat Distribution
Why do it in Chicago?
What about the earthquake in Kashmir and the hurricane in New Orleans?
With so many in great need over there, why just distribute meat in Chicago?”
Islam is a universal and a compassionate faith and knows
no border or distinction between different people. A hungry
person in Chicago is just as deserving as someone who survived the floods or someone overseas.
There is no shortage of poverty in the USA. Research scholars
report classifies one in five US children as poor. These are
the children of single mothers, immigrants and working poor,
squeezed by high rents and low paying jobs. Many Muslim families
are also living in abject poverty throught the USA and in Chicago.
Over three hundred thousand people are served annualy by food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters supplied by the Greater Chicago Food
Depository(GCFD). According to fact sheets posted by the GCFD,
over 36 percent of people served are children.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had stressed again and again that our first duty is to our neighbors. His famous
saying "He is not a believer who lets himself be satiated while his neighbor goes hungry" shows the level of responsibility
we need to feel toward our neighbors.
Muslim compassion and helping hand to fellow Americans is
indeed service based Dawa. It shows our faith as caring,
merciful and compassionate. It defies the adverse propaganda
which depicts us as militant and violent.
ChicagoMuslims.com conducted an online poll during the week of November 20-November 25th, 2005 to understand what
the Chicago Muslim community wanted to focus on for this "Sacrifice for Our Neighbors" drive - 75% of respondents
wanted focus on helping the local Chicago needy.
